#676 Only One Thing is Necessary
Jesus response to Martha’s unrest was ‘You are worried and troubled about many things but only one thing is needed…’ Luke 10:41-42
The message in these verses is to make Jesus the “one thing:” the priority of our lives. The priority of our lives is determined by what we value or treasure the most. “…lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth, nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal….”
Matt 6.18-19
Our heart attachment will be determined by what we treasure—value most in life. “…for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Matthew 6:21
This putting Our Heavenly Father and our Lord Jesus first regulates our spiritual eyesight. “The lamp of the body is the eye; if therefore you eye is clear (healthy, single) your whole body will be full of light.” Matthew 6.22 When we see things with healthy and ‘single-minded’ perception of priority, our whole life will be full of the light of truth and righteousness in contrast to James 1:8.
Matt 6.24 If we serve two masters we will hate (love less) the one and despise the other or be devoted to one and despise 2706 (think less of) the other. When we do not make God and Christ our priority, serving one Master, we create a divided relationship, with divided loyalty.
We will love one master less; and think less of the other. “The supreme affections can be fixed on only one object…One interferes with the other, and the one or the other will be, and must be surrendered.” Barnes
Let us make our Heavenly Father and our Lord Jesus that “one thing.”
”For it is God which worketh in you…Philippians 2.13
“All the powers of Heaven are enlisted on our behalf.” R5854
He has made the development of the Church Class a priority; HIS focused attention is certainly worthy of the continual choice to make Him our priority, worthy of our focused attention and praise!
“O my Strength, I sing praise to you; You, O God my fortress, my loving God.
You guide me with Your counsel, leading me to a glorious destiny.”
Again, such amazing love and care certainly deserves our praise and our single-minded devotion!
Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth.” Psalm 73:24-5 NLT
