#555 A Prayer for the Power of His Penetrating Gaze
“Search me , O God, and know my heart,
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139:23-24
This is really a prayer for deep inner cleansing of the heart and mind.
Search me, LORD—penetrate and examine me and know my heart;
Try me—test, investigate me, and see my thoughts
And see if there be any path, road or mode of life, or any habit of thought,
any wicked—idolatrous or painful way in how I think and live.
And LEAD me LORD – guide me in whatever path will free me
from the thinking and the actions that are out of fear or are offensive to You.
“Examine me, O LORD, and try me; test my mind and my heart.
For Thy lovingkindness—Checed-Affectionate-Covenant-Love— is before my eyes,
and I have walked in Thy truth.” Psalm 26:2-3
He will specially overrule experiences that will penetrate deeply into our hearts and test our thoughts. He already knows, (Psalm 139:1-4) but in this prayer we are surrendering to the Intensity of His knowledge. When we surrender to His penetrating gaze and understanding He can reveal ourselves to ourselves. We in turn surrender what He reveals—the thoughts, the attachments and the behavior to HIM and the power of His Holy spirit. 2 Corinthians 10:5 We need HIS help. “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10 He will thus LEAD us through whatever experiences are necessary to be transformed. Sometimes it requires intense experience to penetrate to the depths. “The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold, but the LORD tests hearts.” Proverbs 17:3
“Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in Thy sight, O LORD, my rock and my Redeemer.” Psalm 19:12-14
