#562 Another Look at “Arise, Let us go hence” John 14.31
Looking back on Jesus in the upper room, we see that he made a deliberate decision to leave that upper room and meet the challenges before him head on.
Armed with “the joy set before him,” and with faith’s conviction and focus, he went forward.
He would speak to them of their abandonment of him, and of the Father’s Faithful Presence with him. He would teach the lessons of the Vine and branches; he would outline some of the severe challenges that would face his followers; he would encourage them with the promise of empowerment that would come from the Holy spirit; he would pray for them and for each one of us.
And then he would face the Accuser and the power of darkness, in mock tribunals, in physical and emotional brutality, in scourging and finally he would walk the road to Calvary and face the Cross.
“Arise, let us go hence.”
“Be rousing yourselves! Let us be leading on from hence.” Rotherham
We can hear him speak to us with these words:
Arise—and let us go forward together into this next challenge.
We walk with him, taking with us his example:
Of faith’s conviction and focus which reached beyond the suffering to the outcome of Glory and Blessing.
Of faith’s conviction and focus despite accusation, on his true identity as the Son of God, the Anointed One who would deliver all people from their sins.
Of faith’s conviction and focus that this sacrifice would eventually be understood and appreciated by the whole world;
Of faith’s conviction and focus on the faithful presence of His Heavenly Father amid betrayal and the abandonment.
This gives us strength—we are empowered to leave our Upper Room of special fellowship apart from the world, and go forward to face and willingly accept the Cup poured for us, in HIS strength and in his peace.
“Then David said to the Philistine, ‘You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have taunted…the LORD does not deliver by sword or by spear; for the battle is the LORD’s and He will give you into our hands.’
"Then it happened when the Philistine rose and came and drew near to meet David, that David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine.” 1 Samuel 17:45, 47, 48
