#515 But Then on The Third Day
“It is finished!” he shouted. And…crying out with a loud voice, he said, ‘Father, into Thy hands I commit my spirit.’ John 19:30; Luke 23:46 NASB
The earth shuddered and twisted in Divine rage, rending the rocks and tearing the thick veil of the Temple in two.
Psalm 116, one of the Hillel Psalms traditionally sung at Passover, records the prophetic experience of Christ in his unbreakable resolution to drink the Cup poured out for him and to pay His vows to the Lord. Psalm 116:12-19 This Psalm also records his death on the cross, “The cords of death encompassed me, and the terrors of Sheol came upon me; I found distress and sorrow.” (Psalm 116:3) Psalm 18 may be a wonderful cross reference to this verse, referring to the experience of death on the cross and then earthquake and the resurrection that followed parts of three days after: (Thank you Sister Claudia!)
“The cords of death encompassed me,
and the torrents of ungodliness terrified [or were assailing: margin] me.
The cords of Sheol surrounded me; the snares of death confronted me.
In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried to my God for help;
He heard my voice out of His temple, and my cry for help before Him came into His ears.” V4-6
“Then the earth shook and quaked;
and the foundations of the mountains were trembling and were shaken,
because He was angry…Psalm 18:7
He bowed the heavens also, and came down with thick darkness under His feet 18:9….
The LORD also thundered in the heavens, and the Most High uttered His voice…” Psalm 18:9,13
The earth shuddered and twisted in Divine rage, rending the rocks and tearing the thick veil of the Temple in two.
But then on the third day…
“He sent from on high, He took me;
He drew me out of many waters.
He delivered me from my strong enemy,
And from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me.”
They confronted me in the day of my calamity
But the LORD was my stay [my support and my protector].
He brought me forth also into a broad place;
He rescued me, because He delighted in me.” Psalm 18:16-19; Psalm 116:5-8
What joy in the moment when the strength and might of God worked “in Christ, when He raised him from the dead,” and what joy in eternity when He “seated him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named…” Ephesians 1:19-21
