#611 Content Whatever Lot I See Part 1
It is easy in these times to rivet our attention on the uncertainties of world events. I experience a consistent need to refocus on what I KNOW, and in living in gratitude for everything He is, and for His provisions, and therefore living in contentment.
From prison Paul wrote: “…I have learned to be content, whatever the circumstances may be. I know now how to live when things are difficult and I know how to live when things are prosperous. In general and in particular I have learned the secret of facing either plenty or poverty. I am ready for anything through the strength of the one who lives within me.” Philippians 4:11-13 Phillips
“In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God concerning us.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 We are prepared for anything through the strength in Christ, which empowers us to live in contentment. Gratitude helps produce contentment regardless of the circumstance. The point becomes not what the circumstance may bring, but gratitude for His Faithfulness and Commitment to us in every circumstance.
Let us remember that Paul’s words are a reflection of the mind of Christ. (It is amazing to meditate on how the counsel of Paul and other New Testament letters and accounts reflect the mind of Christ and help us appreciate the breadths of his love and his sacrifice.) Jesus knew the secret of contentment and surrender in every circumstance, and this surrender was tested even to the death of the cross. “I delight to do Thy will, O my God; thy law is written in my heart.” Psalm 40:8
"Be content with such things as ye have; for he hath said, I will never leave thee nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me. Hebrews 13:5,6 “In our text, after the Apostle has urged us to be "content with such things as ye have," he adds the reason or ground upon which this advice is given, saying, ‘For he hath said, I will never leave thee nor forsake thee.’ Yes; this is the true ground of contentment, the realization of the Lord's care, and that the Lord's wisdom and grace are being exercised towards us,—and that such things as he grants are the things which are best for us, and which we would choose for ourselves, if we had sufficient wisdom and insight into all the circumstances of the case.” R2353
