We arrived in Reykjavik about 7am and were out of the airport very quickly. It was shortly after 8am and still dark as night. We were very tired and took a taxi to our bed and breakfast. We settled in and napped till about 3pm.
We were warned that everything in Iceland is expensive, and that is no exaggeration by any stretch. The airport is about 50km out of Reykjavik, and the ride cost us over $100.00. We decided that we need to rent a car as the taxis are a bid outrageous and there is no Uber yet in Iceland. It cost us another $70.00 to get to the car rental place.
The first night with the car paid for itself, we went to the grocery store and picked up some essentials like tissues, water, yogurt, milk and cereal. No going out for Breakfast. Then we went to a great restaurant for supper (our last meal being on the plane about 6am), but not before checking out a few shops on the way and getting my postcards.
Everyone we met was extremely nice and all spoke English.
We had been tracting since we left, leaving tracts here and there at the 4 airports (Birmingham, Atlanta, JFK, and KEF in Iceland), and some handed to different individuals. Our first taxi driver got one handed to him, the second who said he didn’t really speak English that well, might find one in his car later or his next passenger will find it. Stephan the guy at the Blue Car rental was also handed one as well as a few in the restaurant, as well as the grocery and trinket stores. We are back at the apartment and ready to hit the hay, it has been a long short day.
There is only about 5 hours of sunlight during the winter here, so tomorrow we hit the ground running.
I did some reading about Iceland beforehand and found that while over 80% claim to be Protestant Christian (Lutheran is very big here), only about 10% actually are active in their faith to any degree and that all of the youth do not believe in God as the Creator. When looking for a Bible Study that we might visit, all I found was the JWs. They are an extremely long article on their struggles to gain a foothold in Iceland. I was not invested enough to want to finish it, but decided to contact them before we left.
Siggi got back to me and invited me to their meeting. I informed him that it conflicted with our Skyping into our meeting back home, but said we still want to meet the friends. He told me that there would be “publishers” in the park starting at 10am (and he just got back to me that even though we are supposed to get snow tomorrow they would still be there.). Our plan is to visit them at 10am.
From there our plan is to visit the husband of the Airbnb lady. It is a really cute apartment that belongs to her mom. Bren was reading the titles of the books in our bedroom shelf: 4 volumes on Revelation by B.R.Hicks, Strongs Concordance, a Bible and more. Seemed like an answer to prayers when we saw those books.
Bren called our host to ask about where to park our car and we got into a discussion about the books, and found that this was her mother’s apartment, but they also were active Christians. So, at 11 we will go to meet her husband.
Then in the afternoon we will Skype into our Huntsville meeting, and by the time its over it will be dark, then time for supper and then bed.
Bren will go to work in the morning and I will go horseback riding.
Prayers are always appreciated as we attempt to convert these work trips into Mission trips for the Lord. Bren and I were talking recently about being undercover agents. His job is our cover, but our true mission is the Lord’s work.
