#185 Dealing with Emotions: Today’s “I Think” Recipe
A dear sister emailed me this message:
I am "feeling" overwhelmed right now also. Doubting some past decisions that seemed so right and providential at the time...have now become a big question mark to me???....did I make the wrong move/decision?? We must remember that Our Heavenly Father and Jesus can and will make all things "Right" for us. They can and do move mountains.
As I wrote the word "feeling" (above)...I stopped to wonder just what a "feeling" is. I think they (feelings) can easily trap and trip us…Perhaps, I shall try an experiment and from now on my inner and outer dialog shall be, "I am thinking" or "I think". Perhaps, that seemingly little switch shall "steady" me on my course?? Food for Thought.
Perhaps try this "I think" recipe with me today. Today's "I think" recipe is just this..."I THINK THERE IS ENOUGH TIME FOR EVERYTHING, AND I SHALL NEITHER FRET, REPINE, NOR MURMUR....INSTEAD, I THINK I SHALL QUIET MY MIND AND SOUL NOW, STRETCH MY TRUST TO THE LORD, RESTING CONFIDENTLY AND QUIETLY NOW IN HIS ARMS. ALL IS WELL IN MY WORLD.
Learning to manage our emotions is a significant means by which we can learn to think like our Creator.
If you fail to master your emotions, you are not really running your own life. You are susceptible to emotional manipulation from all directions. Mastering your emotions is really the essence of godly character. Emotional maturity is the technical art of putting into practice the Ten Commandments” {the principles of God.} Emotions tend toward action.
In locating the source of your upset, it may help to realize that emotions are based on your perceptions, not necessarily on reality. The Philadelphia Trumpet
The goal is not to rid ourselves of emotion. We are seeking to sanctify our emotions by sanctifying the thoughts that support the emotions so that our thoughts and feelings create Christ like character and action.
These concepts remind me of the principle in these verses:
“When I am afraid, I will put my trust in Thee. In God, whose word I praise, in God I have put my trust; I shall not be afraid. What can mere man do to me?” Psalm 56:3-4
Emotions move us to some type of action. Observe the action and outcome that the emotion produced to determine if there is a need to adjust and renew our thinking.
The Phrase “When I am afraid” records the feeling of fear. “I will put my trust in Thee” records the beliefs that can impact the feelings. Feelings most often stem from and follow or are at least tempered by the thoughts we focus on.
“In God, whose word I praise” identifies our joy in the Mighty One who keeps His Word and commitments.
“In God I have put my trust” again identifies WHO we are choosing to trust.
“I shall not be afraid” records the declaration of the triumph over fear when we choose to think about and believe in our Mighty God.
Lord bless us on our challenge to be sanctified in our thoughts and emotions.
Much love in Christ,
Joy
