#513 He Endured the Cross Psalm 22 Part 2
Suddenly the noonday sun turned to darkness. The crowd was filled with fear and misgiving. Jesus uttered the first verse of Psalm 22 aloud in prayer to his Father. His mind labored to focus beyond the pain in order to inaudibly utter the Holy Word. He recalled the Psalm in a monotone of thought, the words rising and falling and melting into one another in quick succession as he struggled to breathe in and out.
“My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”
“O God, my God,” “My El , my El ,” my source of strength, You who has the power to deliver me, My strong and Almighty One, why have you forsaken me ?
“Why art thou so far from saving me, and from the words of my loud complaint?” Leeser
“O my God, I cry by day, but You do not answer; and by night, but I have no rest.
Yet You are holy,
O You who are enthroned upon the praises of Israel.
In You our fathers trusted; they trusted and You delivered them.
To You they cried out and were delivered;
in You they trusted and were not disappointed.”
Psalm 22:2-5
Though there was no evidence of the deliverance and though he could not feel the presence of His Father in his emotions he called to mind deliverances of the past.
Even on the cross in this extreme agony of mind and emotion he called upon and trusted in the mighty power and strength of HIS God
Even in this darkness he called to mind the character of his God and Father and declared
“Yet You are holy.”
