#406 His Altar (the Dimensions of Love) Our Home
An email greeting sent by one of our dear Brethren directed my awareness and my prayer through Psalm 84:3.
“Dear little bird who finds the place provided by the Lord's grace”
My soul longed and even yearned for the courts of the LORD;
My heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God.
The bird also has found a house,
And the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young,
Even Thine altars, O LORD of hosts,
My King and my God.” Psalm 84:2-3
Psalm 84 has always been a defining Psalm for me. I have always identified with the sparrow, that’s where my email address comes from, and am realizing even more the practical depths of that awareness.
This process well captures the theme of our New Creature’s life struggle.
I am a little bird who must find the altar, the place of expression of Your love, in order to be home.
I had lost my way in the strong winds of unbalanced perception and the intense storm of emotions they create.
But Your love called me back to the altar; the homing instinct You have planted in my heart heard that call and followed back to the place of love and sacrifice. (Psalm 84:5)
This altar, this condition of love according to Your will—sacrifice--is the only safe place
for this bird to ‘lay her young’—to pass on Life and Blessing.
I will let You love through me, those I find hard to love.
I will give what you ask me to give.
Each of us is this little bird.
In the times when we struggle to live Your love, bring us back Home to Your Altar.
