Jesus Last Prayer and the Joy that Prayer Imparts #1

We studied this chapter in our Bible class.
I was struck with Jesus intention to impart joy to us in this last prayer, spoken aloud in the presence of his followers.
But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy made full in themselves. John 17:13
And now I come to you, and I speak these things while I am still in the world, so they can hear this prayer, and my intention is that my joy will be fulfilled in them when they apply these words to their own lives. John 17:13 paraphrased.
#226 Jesus Last Prayer and the Joy that Prayer Imparts John 17 #1
Jesus lifted his eyes to the heavens and spoke to his Father, with somber and reverent tones. He prayed for the Father to glorify him that he might have the strength to be faithful and thus be glorified. Part of this resurrection glory was to receive authority over all human life, so that he could resurrect every human life and offer each one the opportunity-gift of eternal life.
Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You, even and You gave him authority over all mankind, that to all who You have given him, he may give eternal life. verses 1-2
These words portray the joy and strength of focusing on giving God honor and glory by standing for His cause when we are faced with extremity of experience:
“The Son’s anxiety to glorify the Father is most marked when, realizing he was approaching his dying agony, he exclaimed, “Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour? Father glorify thy name.” John 12:27-28 R3161:3
…who for the joy set before him endured the cross, despising the shame…” Hebrews 12:2
He was about to experience death on behalf of a dead world. This was an unthinkable scenario, to be in a state of temporary oblivion, and have no sentient ability to praise the Father. “Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD!” Psalm 150:6
He was very aware of the preciousness of the gift of life, and very aware of the purpose of life, to experience the only true God and deliverance from sin through his sacrifice and resurrection power. He was willing to die the death of the cross in order to bring this purpose of life to all humanity.
And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. Verse 3
The purpose of life is the joy of knowing and experiencing God and Christ!
There is great joy when we envision the whole world when they will know God and Christ:
Isaiah 11:9 The knowledge of the LORD will fill the earth;
Jer 32:34 The end result of the Kingdom is that all will know him from the least to the greatest; there will be no need for witnessing, because the testimony of God will be in each heart.
John 3:16 The gift of eternal life is only through faith and appreciation of Jesus, the proof of God’s great love for the whole human family.
Rev 22:17 Imagine the time when the spirit and the Bride say COME!
