#227 Jesus' Last Prayer and the Joy that Prayer Imparts John 17 #2
To this point in time he had fulfilled the will of the Father in every particular. Aware of what lay ahead of him, the mocking, the scourging, and the crucifixion, he steeled his heart with determination to fulfill His Father’s will until his last breath.
I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given me to do. Verse 4
Jesus speaks here of the joy that comes when we glorify God as we fulfill the will of God for us on earth.The purpose of life is to know and experience God and Christ. The mission of life is to live their cause.
“My food is to do the will of Him who sent me, and to accomplish His work.” John 4:34
This mission provides our spiritual survival and our spiritual fulfillment.
When the heavens were opened to him at his baptism, Jesus understood and may well have remembered his pre-human existence and the position of honor he had with the Father, in the closest relationship and in partnership with Him in carrying out the creation process. John 1:1-3
And now, glorify me together with Yourself, Father, with the glory which I had with You before the world was. Verse 5
There is unspeakable joy in being close to the Father and to share in His joy of creating and making things new, as well as making new things. We have the joy of being made new and well as the privilege of joining in the ministry of reconciliation when all people will be made new! 2 Corinthians 5:17; Revelation 21:5
The burden of his life and this prayer is for intimacy with God for himself and for his church in order to bring the joy of intimacy with God to the whole human family.
