#616 “Yet Thou art Holy”
“My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Far from saving me, The words of my loud lamentation?” Rotherham “O my God, I cry by day, but Thou doest not answer; and by might, but I have no rest.” Psalm 22:1-1 The feeling of abandonment surrounded his senses completely, and the literal sun was in darkness and it seemed to be night. Mark 15:33-34
We see the depth of anguish that our Precious Savior experienced as he experienced a sorrow above all other sorrows. Isaiah 53.3 We know that from this experience Jesus understands the times when we are unable to sense the presence of the Father in our feelings. And we see His faithfulness even in the depths of this experience through the account in Psalm 22.
“Yet Thou art Holy”
Regardless of the alienation and separation from the Father that Jesus experienced, he maintained the absolute conviction, BUT YOU ARE HOLY. He reviewed the past deliverances of the Fathers of Faith as proof of the Holiness of the Father. “Yet Thou art holy, O Thou who art enthroned upon the praises of Israel. In Thee our fathers trusted; They trust, and Thou didst deliver them. To Thee they cried out, and were delivered; In Thee they trusted, and were not disappointed.” Psalm 22:1-5
He reviewed the Father’s protection of him even as a child. “Yet Thou art He who didst bring me forth from the womb; Thou didst make me trust when upon my mother’s breasts. Upon Thee I was cast from birth; Thou has been my God from my mother’s womb.” Psalm 22:9-10
He continued to pray for help and deliverance, acknowledging the Father as His source of strength, and claiming his relationship as precious to the Father. “But You, O LORD, be not far off; my strength, hasten to my aid. Save my life from the sword, my precious life from the clutches of a dog…” Psalm 22:19-21 Tenach
He declared his trust in the future blessing, when resurrected he would have the power and privilege to glorify the Father, to first the Church class and then eventually the world, empowering them to see and understand the name of the LORD—the depth of love of the Father through his crucifixion. He declared that the experience of feeling forsaken by the Father was temporary. “I will tell of Thy name to my brethren; in the midst of the assembly I will praise Thee. You who fear the Lord, praise Him; all you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him, and stand in awe of Him, all you descendants of Israel. For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither has He hidden His face from him; but when he cried to Him for help, He heard.” Psalm 22:22-24
The joy set before him continued to give him strength, as he recited the sure hope: “All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations will worship before Thee. For the kingdom is the Lord’s and He rules over the nations.” Psalm 22:27-28
We KNOW that He will never leave us or forsake us. But even when we cannot sense He is there we know He is. And we also proclaim in faith YET—despite the appearance, despite if things don’t make sense at the time, despite whatever the experience, YOU ARE HOLY. Let us hold fast to our faith, especially inspired by our Precious Savior, when feeling defies that faith. “Behold, I go forward, but He is not there, and backward, but I cannot perceive Him; When He acts on the left, I cannot behold Him; He turns on the right, I cannot see Him. But He knows the way I take; when He has tried me, I shall come forth as gold.” Job 23:8-10
