#489 Listening to His Voice Amid the Physical Challenge of Shingles
I am dealing with shingles and listening to the LORD’s voice through the experience.
Over 1/3 of the population of the United States may get shingles, and this is one of the myriads of ‘common to our human family’ experiences that we are called to experience with the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 10:13
The hardest part of this experience for me is the physical discomfort and the fact that the shingles rash is on my forehead and hairline on the right side of my face. I feel self conscious and it is hard for me to go out in public. (I am resting and napping often, and when it is necessary to be with people I practice smiling with the intent to rejoice and be kind despite my insecurities.) I also wonder about future symptoms. I have a dear friend who has suffered for years from painful shingles.
“The best response to losses or thwarted hopes is praise…All good things are from Me…Instead of feeling entitled to all those blessings, respond to them with gratitude. Be prepared to let go of anything I take from you, but never let go of My hand.” S Young
Job 1:21 Whether He gives or whether he takes away, I praise Him for who He is.
I know I can trust the One who pours the cup. John 18:11
I know that this experience is an expression of His love, in its intended results. Hebrews 12:5-6
I know this is an opportunity to demonstrate Trust in Him regardless of circumstance. Psalm 56:3
I know they are Both with me, walking me through each step of challenge. Isaiah 43:2
I know that the future is not mine to worry about; it is His to take care of. Matthew 6:25-34
I think one of the LORD’s lessons to me through this is to continue to de-stress by Trusting and relaxing more in His will, and physically as well as emotionally.
I am always in a hurry to get as much done as I can, which can be a strength and a deficit both. I think the hurry part adds to my stress….I see His leading to adjust my work situation and shorten my hours… Lord teach me Sabbath Rest in busy and challenging times.
“My presence will go with you and I will give you rest.” Exodus 33:14
Philippians 4:4-7 Paraphrase: There is always a reason to rejoice in the Lord, find it!
May your gentleness and appropriateness be seen in all your behavior: Remember how close to you and your experience the Lord is.
Don’t worry, rather in every situation talk to the Lord is prayer, and make your requests and prayers with gratitude, as prayers of confidence, knowing that He knows what is best.
This is the recipe for peace, the peace that God possesses, a peace which is beyond human ability to fully comprehend. This peace will guard and keep watch over your hearts and minds through the power of our resurrected Christ Jesus, the one chosen by God to deliver us from sin.
