#685 Serving By Night
I had been feeling unacknowledged for some occasions of service, and also concerned about what the LORD might require of me as part of the Cup as the future unfolds. The LORD in His perfect timing brought Psalm 134 to my attention.
“Behold, bless the LORD, all servants of the LORD,
Who serve by night in the house of the LORD!
Lift up your hands to the sanctuary, and bless the LORD.
May the LORD bless you from Zion,
He who made heaven and earth. Psalm 134.2
These Levites who served by night in the house of the LORD were singers. 1 Chronicles 9:33 A commentary states that Levite singers were employed during shifts in both the day and the night, either composing or ordering sacred songs or actually singing, or teaching others to sing, ‘day and night’ –continually—especially in the morning and the evening. “Thus God was continually praised…”!!! Selected
Lessons from the Levites:
Verse 1 In the night time of experience, when our service is unknown or not acknowledged,
(Verse 2) keep serving Him by ‘blessing the LORD’ in worship and praise.
(Verse 3) keeping the blessing of others in your heart and prayers.
While meditating on this Psalm I became aware of some very difficult experiences some of our employees were facing: a child who was being choked by an alcoholic father and the necessity of a restraining order; an employee with diabetes who has severe infections in his foot and is facing the possibility of amputation; not to mention the many other great difficulties of this groaning creation….
Awareness of these experiences drove home the thought that what happens to me and the amount I may or may not be called upon to suffer doesn’t matter; What matters is the blessing of others—the blessing of our Brethren and the blessing of this weary world, and the continual day and night praise to our Heavenly Father. Psalm 134:2-3
Again, the focus needs to be on our Heavenly Father and our Lord Jesus, and the privilege of honoring and glorifying THEM in an attitude of continual praise. Psalm 134:1-2 Jesus made the suffering of shame a little thing through the joy set before him. Hebrews 12:1-2 We also! We PRAISE THEM for the joy set before us!
In the dark nights of our service, we have the privilege to continue our worship and praise and our focus on the blessing of others!!!
