#683 Tenacious Love Part 1
“Put me as a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm.” These words of our Beloved Lord Jesus call us to guard our heart affections and our actions, so that Christ has the access and so that He is the priority of life. This is possible because of the tenacity of love that He has for us, and that we grow to have for him: “For love is as strong as death, jealousy (exclusive devotion NWT; zeal) is a severe as Sheol; Its flashes are flashes of fire, the very flame of the LORD.” Song of Solomon 8:6 For love will conquer all; exclusive devotion is as fierce as Sheol; This love is like a fire whose eternal source is God.
“Many waters cannot quench love, nor will rivers overflow it.” The many waters of overwhelming experience cannot quench love. “If a man were to give all the riches of his house for love, it would be utterly despised (disrespected).” Song of Solomon 8:7 This Illustration depicts a love so complete and totally committed it is willing to give anything at great personal cost, despite the judgment of our old way of thinking to hold back from the sacrifice we have been led to carry out, and despite the judgment of others that such a life of sacrifice is folly.
This tenacious love comes first from our Heavenly Father. “God is love…” 1 John 4:7
He manifested His love through the sacrifice of our Precious Savior, and thus Jesus also possessed and was faithful in living this tenacious love. “This is how God showed his love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” This love has been shed abroad in our hearts Romans 5:5, and continues to grow.
“Why should I despair of loving Jesus with a love as strong as death? He deserves it: I desire it. The martyrs felt such love, and they were but flesh and blood, then why not I? They mourned their weakness, and yet out of weakness were made strong. Grace gave them all their unflinching constancy-there is the same grace for me. Jesus, lover of my soul, shed abroad such love, even thy love in my heart, this evening.” Selected
