#400 The Mind of Christ as Revealed on the Cross Part 2
"My God! my God! Why hast thou forsaken me?”
His Father sent no angel to comfort him—or speak a Voice of encouragement as before—but Jesus gained courage from the realization he was fulfilling the prophecy of Psalm 22:1. He had to be cut off completely from his Father…taking the sinner’s place in death. --Sister Rebekah
Jesus gained courage from the realization that he was fulfilling the prophecy of Psalm 22:1, when the Father’s face was turned from him and emotion and sense could not sense Him.
And in times when emotion and sense cannot sense His presence our lives, may the mind of Christ in us rely on the same source of courage, that we are doing His will to the best of our ability.
"I thirst"
After this, Jesus knowing that all things had already been accomplished, in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, ‘I am thirsty.’ John 19:28 In fulfillment of Psalm 69:21 and Psalm 21:15, Jesus spoke aloud of his thirst. It was the only statement of need or discomfort uttered, and it was spoken so that the prophecy that he would be given sour wine would be fulfilled. Even on the cross he thought on the word of His Father, he was aware of its every facet and he labored to fulfill its every detail. Psalm 119:111-112!
O may the mind of Christ in us set our desire to fulfill His will and word regardless of the extremity of experience.
“Am I seeking to do God's will in even the smallest details revealed in His word and providences?” --Clearwater Brethren
"It is finished" It was after Jesus had received the sour wine that he cried out, “It is finished.” John 19:30a
Jesus purpose in life was to glorify His Father during his earthly ministry on earth, and accomplish the work the Father had given him to do. John 17:4 His accomplishments were defined by the will of the Father. He continued to be “The Word of God,” the perfect representation of the thoughts and desires of His Father, in his pre-human existence, in his earthly life and ministry and then in resurrection glory. John 1:1; John 14:9, Revelation 19:13 Even in his last dark moments on the cross the truth of who he was shone through despite brutally accusing appearances.
May we define ourselves by the mind of Christ in us. May our sense of accomplishment be in fulfilling His will to the best of our ability, even amid the most trying of circumstances, even when the circumstance and opinion of others seem to define us as of no worth. 2 Corinthians 2:14-17
“...Am I so living that when the time comes there will be nothing left for me to do but breathe my last breath.”-- Clearwater Brethren
“And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, ‘Father, into Thy hands I commit my spirit.’ Matthew 27:50a; Luke 23:46a and yielded up his spirit.” Matthew 27:50b Luke 23:46b; “And he bowed his head, and gave up his spirit.” John 19:30b
“…and while being reviled, he did not revile in return; while suffering, he uttered no threats, but kept entrusting himself to him who judges righteously; and he himself bore our sins in his body on the cross…” 1 Peter 2:23-24 NASB The mind of Christ trusted the Father, come what may, continually. He trusted His Father for the parts of three days he would be in the grave. He trusted His Father to fulfill His promises of resurrection, with all power in heaven and earth, first to bless his Church of faithful followers, and then to bless all the families of the earth during the coming Kingdom on earth.
May the Mind of Christ in us continually trust, come what may.
“... In my daily experiences am I resting in faith, committing my soul to Him in well-doing as unto a Faithful Creator? (Psalm 31:5; 1 Peter 4:19)” -- Clearwater Brethren
