Thoroughly Known, Thoroughly Pursued

#324 Thoroughly Known, Thoroughly Pursued Psalm 139.1-10
I tend to feel ashamed when I have intense reactions. The shame I feel tends to keep me isolated, from the LORD and from people. I was reminded again, in the midst of some intense emotions, that I can pour my heart out before the LORD, (Psalm 62:8) and that He completely understands me; through Christ He sees me as innocent and He is ready to lead me to the next step of adjustment.
O LORD, Thou hast searched me, and known me.
Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising; Psalm 139:1-2
He knows our ups and down, and all the activities and details of our lives. (Deuteronomy 6:6-7 uses the phrases ‘when you sit’ ‘when you walk’ ‘when you lie down’, and ‘when you rise up’ to describe a complete day and what is done in that day.)
Thou understandest my thought afar off. Psalm 139:2b
We are not too little to escape His notice and love.
He is not too great to see and care about the details of one life.
That IS His greatness. Psalm 102:19-20 “For he looked down from His holy height; from heaven the LORD gazed upon the earth, to hear the groaning of the prisoner; to set free those who were doomed to death…”
Thou measurest my going about and my lying down,
and art acquainted with all my ways. Psalm 139:3
According to Soncino, this phrase “Thou measurest” should be translated, ‘Thou siftest,’ ie submit to minute scrutiny. Not only is He aware of the details of our lives, He sifts through these details, allowing what will help us grow and sifting out what would not be for our highest good.
Even before there is a word on my tongue, behold, O LORD,
Thou dost know it all. NASB Psalm 139:4
He completely understands what we wish to communicate, and the meaning that comes before the words.
Thou hast hemmed me in behind and before, and laid Thy hand upon me. Psalm 139:5
The word “hemmed” is a “verb to describe laying siege to a city. God has, as it were, besieged him so that there is no escape.” Soncino
He has laid His hand of power upon our life and He IS Able to triumph over every facet of our life.
No aspect of the human condition is inaccessible to His conquering power. Psalm 139:7-10
What great intimacy and blessing to be so thoroughly known, understood, and sought after
by the Most High God!
“It is beyond my knowledge; it is a mystery; I cannot fathom it.” !!! Psalm 139:6 Tenach
