#494 Triumph Over Appearance Romans 8:35-36
Can ….. peril or sword or any circumstance separate us from the agape of God in Christ Jesus?
As it is written in Psalm 44:22 “For Thy sake we are being put to death all day long; we were considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” Romans 8:36
The Psalmist states that they had not forgotten God or dealt falsely with His covenant, and yet they were going through such difficult experiences. He reminds God that it is “for Thy sake” that they are being put to death—it was because of their faithfulness to Him and to His will that they were dying as sheep, innocent sheep led to death. Psalm 44:17-19, 20-22 The Psalmist then pleads to the LORD to awake, to not reject them forever, to not hide His face or forget their affliction. “Arouse Thyself, why dost Thou sleep, O Lord? Awake, do not reject us forever. Why dost Thou hide Thy face, and forget our affliction and our oppression? For our soul has sunk down into the dust; our body cleaves to the earth. Rise up, be your help, and redeem us for the sake of Thy lovingkindness.” Psalm 44:23-26
It seems like Paul is drawing from the honest pouring out of discouragement in this Psalm and helping us to see beyond that discouragement as he quotes this verse in Romans 8:36.
Paul declares that all things are working together for good (verse 28), and that we have the power of the holy Spirit and intercession and prayers of Christ on our behalf (verse 26-27).
Paul declares that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ (verse 35), that we know the Father will freely give us all that we truly need because He proved the depth of His love and commitment when He gave us His son (verse 32), that in all these things we overwhelming conquer because of His committed love to us (verse 37). “For Thy sake” we experience that testings and challenges--we have a cause that we are willing to die for.
O may we overcome the discouragement that interprets challenging tests (mentioned in verse 35) of pressure, of being hemmed in and apparently trapped, of persecution, of lack of material things, of shame, danger or death as signs of Divine rejection.
Teach us to see and to trust Your committed love in every experience and challenge.
May we claim the Truth that transforms the appearance of circumstance and the resulting discouragement of Psalm 44:23-26 into expectation of victory in Christ:
The LORD IS awake and His eyes are open.
He is not rejecting us;
His favor is shining upon us and He has not forgotten our oppression--
He does not misplace His attention and get distracted from awareness and action on our behalf in the midst of our challenges. He is rising up. He is redeeming us.
He is feely giving us all things we need!
In all these things we gain a decisive victory through the relationship and power of the One that loves us with such commitment!
