#365 Waterlogged and Triumphant Psalm 42.11
Lack of sleep and circumstantial challenge led to some emotional upheaval and the need to claim the Truth of His perspective of Psalm 42. So I am getting more sleep and letting this Word direct my thinking.
“O my God, my soul is in despair within me;
therefore I remember Thee from the land of the Jordan,
and the peaks of Hermon, from Mount Mizar.” Psalm 42:6
When we are discouraged, what do we focus on?
The Psalmist chose to remember the God of the Promised Land.
“Deep calls to deep at the sound of Thy waterfalls; [NASB]
all Thy waves and Thy billows are gone over me.” [Masoretic text] Psalm 42:9
“The melting snows from the peaks of Hermon form thunderous waterfalls; and to these are added the rapids of the Jordan. All this display of the forces guided by the hand of God makes him think of the waters of tribulation which were overwhelming him.” Soncino
The waves and billows that surround us are HIS waves and billows.
Let us always remember that the melting snows that create the thunderous waterfalls which meet the rapids of the Jordan are life giving waters.
The overwhelm is a display of the forces guided by the Loving, Wise Hand of God.
“The LORD will command His lovingkindess in the daytime; and His song will be with me in the night,
a prayer to the God of my life.” Psalm 42:9 NASB
By day He overrules His lovingkindness on our behalf,
and by night His song is with us, always a reason to praise the God of our life.
“I will say to God my rock, ‘Why hast thou forgotten me?
Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?’…
We need to pray to the God of our stability, and bring Him our dilemmas and our “Whys”.
“Why are you in despair, O my soul?
And why have you become disturbed within me?” Psalm 42:11
And here is the answer:
“Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him,
The help of my countenance, and my God.” Psalm 42:11
He has not forgotten us.
The billows that flow over us are the display of the forces guided by the Loving, Wise Hand of our God.
By day He commands His lovingkindness on our behalf.
By night we continually have reason to praise the God of our life.
“Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him,
The help of my countenance, and my God.”
He is the ‘salvations’ (pointing to many acts of providence) of my entire person, and my God.
