What does Jesus mean when he said this? Revelation 3:20?
Look, I'm standing at the door and knocking. If anyone listens to my voice and opens the door, I'll come in and we'll eat together.
I don't understand what this scripture means?
Who is Jesus talking about in this scripture?
Answer:
This is a message to the church of Laodicea.
The book of Revelation is a book of symbols--it says this in chapter one when it says it is "sign-i-fied".
The 7 churches are Revelation while they correspond to seven literal cities in Turkey, those literal cities are not the main point. They were picked for their characteristics and symbolic meaning. The higher meaning is the spiritual and not the physical.
The 7 churches picture the 7 stages of the Gospel Age--each period of the growth of the Church for the last 2 thousand years. We are in the 7th stage--the 7th trumpet--the 7th seal. The condemnation to the Church of Laodicea is a condemnation to today's Christian--we are lukewarm--indifferent and that is a sin.
It is in this 7th stage of the Church that Jesus returns.
We see in the message to Philadelphia, "I come quickly"--showing the promise of his second coming was near.
In the 7th church--he comes. The 7th church is the last, it also corresponds as I stated to the trumpets--the following scripture also corresponds to that trumpet--as the 7th is the last trumpet.
1Co_15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
The coming and eating together---Truth is often symbolized by food. "Man shall not live by bread alone but by every Word of God." "meat of the Word" "Milk of the Word" "Strong Meat belongeth to them who are of full age"
There is special "meat in due season" required at Jesus' second coming. Those who recognize he is here, will come and eat --that is get that dispensational truth from him.
