What is a Biblical Family?
I've browsed your blog, but didn't see anything about the family. What is a Biblical Family?
Is it an irrelevant concept or should we modify our thoughts, attitudes and behavior to be in agreement with God's model of the family?
Answer:
Today society is indoctrinating us in what is acceptable as a family unit. Two Dads, two, moms, or even a mother and a father who are not married and then there is the least acceptable it seems a mother and father who are married.
What is God’s model of the family? I would hope everyone who calls themselves a Christian is on the same page on that--one man and one woman. But let’s even take it a bit further.
Marriage is not an option for the Christian who wants to start a family the old fashioned way (i.e. procreation). But what is acceptable marriage according to God’s Word?
If a Christian is looking to get married, we are commanded to marry only in the Lord. Marriage has to be about more than the flesh, because once the honeymoon is over, you are accountable to the vows you made to that person and if they are on a different path than you are your life will be an uphill battle and possibly filled with hostility. Not only is it important to marry in the Lord, but marry someone who has the same goals in their Christianity and is moving at the same pace at least.
If one is married before they come to the Lord, then you need to grow where you are. That is not an excuse to terminate your marriage. You were called in that condition and it is your job to be a living epistle to be seen and read of men—i.e. your spouse.
Shacking up is a sin, and anyone who takes the name of Christ and is living in sin, should be disfellowshipped as in the example of the Corinthian brother until the situation is corrected and repented of.
Then we get into the topic of divorce and remarriage. Touchy subject, but it is important and part of God’s model of the family.
There are reasons for divorce, I won’t deny that. Abuse is a big one as well as adultery. If your spouse commits adultery against you and you choose to divorce (divorce is not mandatory), then you are free to remarry. However, if you are the one who committed the adultery, even if you have repented with “overmuch sorrow,” you are not permitted to marry again. God will not recognize the second marriage in that case, and so it will not be a biblical family.
Everything that has been said is instruction for the consecrated Christian, it has no relevance to the world as they are not under a covenant relation with God and are not bound to obey His Word at this time.
