#447 Whatever We Do Colossians 3.17,23 Part 2
“And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father…Whatever you do, do your work heartily as for the Lord rather than for men…” Colossians 3:17,23
A thought about whatever we do, in conversation or in action:
I just attended a seminar for my job on Supervision. One thought I really appreciated is in regard to delegation: Some of what we delegate is ‘busy work.’ But REAL delegation is sharing responsibilities with employees for the purpose of making them better, of developing their skills.
And it occurred to me that our Heavenly Father delegates a multitude of ‘jobs’ to us.
He delegates various jobs and challenges to us through stewardship. Everything in our life becomes part of our opportunity to be responsible to His will. He NEVER GIVES US BUSY WORK!
No matter what the ‘whatever we do in word or deed’ it is all meant to ‘make us better,’ and to create the image of Christ is us. Romans 8:28-29
Whether we are washing the dishes, driving to work, working at our job, taking care of our kids, THIS IS NOT BUSY WORK! It is the ‘mundane’ that is made holy through the Holy spirit of God. “What God hath cleansed, that call thou not common.” Acts 10:15 (in principle)
Look at the context of the ‘whatever we say or do’ verse:
Verse 10: Put on the new self
13 (Phillips) accept life, and be most patient and tolerant with one another, always ready to forgive if you have a difference with anyone.
14 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts…thankful for what God has done for you
16 Let Christ’s teaching live in your hearts; Teach and help one another along the right road with praises. Then verse 17: Whatever you do, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus…
The mind of Christ in us, described in verse 10-16, is challenged to express itself in every facet of our lives. Everything we do in life is part of this scenario. Sandwiched in between the ‘whatever you do’ in verse 17 and verse 23 are the marriage relationship, raising children, responsibilities of ‘slaves’ and in our day, employees, and then in Colossians 4:1-6, the responsibilities of the employer.
We all know this, but it is riveting for me to be reawakened to the fact that EVERY experience, every relationship, every ‘mundane’ task is made holy and each are opportunities to express the mind of Christ and to be transformed in this process.
I will have this challenging conversation with my husband, with my daughter, with my employee (or Whatever!) with my whole heart, by the authority and in the power of my Lord Jesus, my example and my deliverer.
I give thanks through him to You, heavenly Father, as this situation unfolds.
What I am doing I do with my whole heart for You.
