I don’t understand some people.
What started as an innocent question quickly degraded into name calling. Really? Are we children of the Adversary or children of God?
It is a good thing to be sure of ourselves, but to be so confident that we can’t admit when we are wrong is a sin. It is the sin of pride. We can wrap it any way we want and say we are standing for the Truth, but when we refuse to look at proof another is supplying and take a step back and say, “Hmm, they have a point and maybe I should think about this for more than two seconds before I fire off a reply.”
The question was: “Who was the last prophet sent of God?”
The answer given by another was Jesus Christ.
I, myself thought about that answer and didn’t answer right away. I knew that all the Apostles were considered prophets. John wrote the book of Revelation which is all Prophecy. Then I thought, well it says that Jesus gave that prophecy to John (which he got from God Himself). But then doesn’t all true prophecy come from God—so would this negate John being a prophet. I don’t think so.
I decided to look up the word prophet in the New Testament and then do a search on the word itself. I came up with this prophet who I would have never thought about. But will be thinking about him more in the future.
Act_21:10 And as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judaea a certain prophet, named Agabus.
So, I ask you—was Agabus a prophet? Seems like a simple question. Seems like a very plain statement of Scripture—so why the name calling? I am still scratching my head and talking to myself on this one.
Here are some of comments made to me over my answer.
“Don't you realize what you are saying? To say it is not Jesus Christ is to open the door to apostasy, to lies, to false teachings. Who is the last prophet then? Muhammad?, Joseph Smith? Who? Are we awaiting another? No! It is the Lord Jesus Christ!”
“You wish to open the door to apostasy and lies! I for one will call it for what it is! Lord Jesus Christ is the last prophet of God! You wish to believe lies! Go right ahead! Shame on you!”
Again I asked him to answer my question: Please answer my question was Agabus a prophet? Was the Apostle John a prophet?
“Then stop this nonsense at once!”
Maybe he didn’t get the question, so I asked him again
“ I will not entertain stupid, unfruitful questions. You have the word of God!”
“Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit. (Proverbs 26:4-5 KJV)”
“But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain. A man that is an heretic after the first and second admonition reject; (Titus 3:9-10 KJV)”
So, I answered; “Listen if you can't answer it, just admit it. The scripture says he was a prophet--does it not?
“1Pe_3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
“Mat_5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.”
Well that just fueled the fire.
"1 Peter 3:15 speaks of answering anyone why Someone is a believer on Jesus Christ. Their Savior. Is that your question? No, so i will avoid your foolish argument. Matt. 5:22 speaks of one believer being angry with another believer. Are you a believer? I don't know! and I am not angry with you, but I refuse to answer your foolish, unprofitable question!
"Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit. (Proverbs 26:4-5 KJV)
"But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain. A man that is an heretic after the first and second admonition reject; (Titus 3:9-10 KJV)"
Still talking to myself and still shaking my head and so I replied again:
“Why are you getting so angry.
“You will address the Peter scripture (then say I am not a believer--but call me a fool just the same) And then call me a heretic.
“Why won't you address the Agabus question?
“Why is it so hard to address that question?
“Why are you so angry---you have made personal attacks on me ---so please don't tell me you are not angry--that is what angry people do--they make personal attacks because they refuse to think about a very simple question.
“I normally like a lot of your answers--but this attacking and name calling is a bit much.
“You call it a foolish question.
“I quoted you a scripture--is the scripture true or not? Simple question, simple answer. Not foolish. Only not answering it is.”
Well, he finally admitted he was angry
"I'm angry because you wish to deny scripture. Which opens the door to heresy! Lord Jesus is the last prophet. This is the same claim as I said before muhammad and joseph smith and others claim! This cannot be allowed."
I let him end the conversation with:
"Read revelations! The last words of prophecy are spoken there by Lord Jesus Christ! He is the last prophet!
Interestingly enough the conversation did end with an apology and things simmered down.
We need to all learn how to communicate. Stay on topic and keep our flesh out of it. We get to name calling because we are incapable or unwilling to look at the topic from anyone else's viewpoint but our own. We don't have to come out agreeing, but we should have respect enough to consider where another is coming from, especially when they provide scriptural backup.
We can't use "zeal" as an excuse for us going berserk. Well that is another rant for another time--I am too worn out from this discussion.
