Prayers that They will be honored as we remember our Precious Savior,
and that we will be renewed in spirit for our unrepeatable privilege
to partake of this Bread and to drink of this Cup.
#564 Yet You Are Holy Psalm 22 Part 2
Jesus endured the taunts and challenges of the religious leaders. Psalm 22:7-8, 12-13
He endured extreme physical pain of hanging on the cross with every breath an effort, and with raging thirst. Psalm 22:14-15, 16-17
They divided his garments and cast lots for his clothing. Psalm 22:18
But amid this extremity of experience his conviction and focus of faith did not change.
This Psalm suggests the following focus of thought— recognizing God as holy and exalting Him with praise in the same way the praises of Israel enthroned and exalted Him.
Jesus recognized God as holy and exalted Him as he called to mind the deliverances of the fathers of Israel in the past. Psalm 22:4-5
He recognized God as holy and exalted Him with praise even when he identified himself as a ‘worm’—the tola worm—insignificant on the cross, yet the means of deliverance for all people. The imagery of a worm suggests insignificance and ineffectiveness. Isaiah 41:14 Jesus FELT insignificant, small and ineffective in that time on the cross; yet the seed of hope is also apparent. For this worm is not just any worm, but the tola. The word ‘tola’ refers to the crimson coccos from which the scarlet dye was obtained. This word is translated scarlet for the color used to dye the Tabernacle curtains Ex 25:4; 26:1 and the scarlet cord that identified Rahab as a means of her deliverance in the fall of Jericho. Joshua 21:18 just as the blood of the lamb of Passover delivered the children of Israel from the angel of that carried out God’s judgment of death. Ex 12:12
He acknowledged God as holy and exalted Him with praise when he called to mind the protection and overruling of the Heavenly Father in his years as an infant and toddler, when it was impossible for him to defend himself. Psalm 22:9-10 The overshadowing care of the Father protected him from the murderous decree of Herod. Defenseless and exposed on the cross, he declared his trust in the provision and protection of his Father.
He acknowledged God as holy and exalted Him with praise with the words “he has listened to his cry for help.” He knew that regardless of the current overwhelm his prayers for help and deliverance would be answered in the Father’s time. Psalm 22:19-21
He acknowledged God as holy and exalted Him with praise when his mind reviewed the declaration of determination and vision for the future blessing of both the church and the whole human family. Psalm 22:22-31
“Yet You are holy…” He chose to exalt His God and Father by the focus and conviction that never lost sight of the joy set before him, making it possible to endure the cross. Hebrews 12:1 “Hallelujah, What a Savior!”
and that we will be renewed in spirit for our unrepeatable privilege
to partake of this Bread and to drink of this Cup.
